Researchers at the University of Geneva and the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, Switzerland have demonstrated feathers in birds and scales in fish share a common ancestry. On the basis of new analyses of embryonic development, the Swiss biologists found molecular and micro-anatomical signatures that are identical between hairs, feathers and scales.

Science aside, I find the forms and beauty of feathers and scales to be inspiring, so given their surprising commonality, I decided to juxtapose the feathers and scales from my two favorite photographic subjects, birds and fish…
